Our love of bicycles and traveling started early in our relationship, and it was during this time that we asked ourselves, “How would it be if we could live in Europe instead of just visiting”. Several years later, we realized our dream and moved to southern Germany. We took to the European lifestyle right away; commuting by bike, buying local organic produce, and of course, exploring nearby locations (on bike because you can see so much more).
We had both cycled in the U.S, but nothing major. And, to be honest, it sometimes felt more like a chore than an adventure because the infrastructure in America is not partial to cycling like Europe is. But, when we moved to Europe all of that changed. Cycling is not only decidedly safer, it is a widely accepted reality among motorists. We started finding new trails and roads to ride on and our world really opened up. Our first cycling vacation was on a tour to Tuscany, Italy. What could we say, but AMAZING! We were hooked! Following our first bike tour, we got more serious about our fitness and our level of cycling. We developed a deeper interest in training regimens, bicycle mechanics, cycling gear, food and wine, and of course spectacular places to ride.
Most of our vacations are cycle-centric and we look for ways to chronicle our epic adventures. That is the genesis of ourbikelife.net. Our passion and interest in cycling, and all that goes along with it, is something we want to share with you. The content on this blog is not only about the perspectives of two expat Americans who love to travel, but also practical information on where to ride, where to stay, product reviews on cycling gear and components, and of course, wine and food!
While sites like Strava are excellent resources for where to ride and route building, we are hoping to add to that by discussing the sorts of particulars you don’t necessarily glean as easily by providing insights such as good spots to break and refill on food and water. Someone once said that ‘adventures always suck when you’re having them’. We hope that those who read our blog can experience some of the epic adventures we have, but without the ‘unwanted serendipity’!
Please join us on our blog and on the road! We look forward to creating a community of friends as passionate about cycling, food, and travel as we are.
We try our best to live a healthy lifestyle. Our diet consists of mostly fish and vegetables, but it is not to say we don’t eat meat. There is nothing better than a great meal, some wine and an epic bike ride to fill your day. So welcome to OurBikeLife!
